I am pretty sure that Southwest do not charge anything. You just cancel and they give you 100% Southwest credit valid for 12 months and it is transferable to another passenger. I fly with them a lot and change flights all the time and have never had to pay.

As in every airline Southwest has different fares on the same route, the closer it is to the departure date, the more expensive it is. If you could change a ticket to another date which costs the same as the original one, they don't usually charge. But if make a new booking too close to the departure date you would have to pay for the difference in the fare and that would mean more money even without any change fee. The average cost should be around double. Southwest is also one of the very few airlines that let you change the dates online without having to call. But if you don't have a set date yet, call them and tell them you need to reschedule.

As has been noted by other answers, Southwest does not charge change fees in order to change a ticket with their airline. If a ticket needs to be changed, 100 percent of the value of the ticket can be applied to a new ticket, meaning that the only costs that would need to be borne, if any, are to pay the price difference between the old ticket and the new ticket. You'll want to contact Southwest before takeoff of the flight today (in other words, as soon as possible) to cancel the original ticket, so that you do not jeopardize losing the value of the ticket. (Many airline tickets become worthless if they are not cancelled before the departure time, if they are not used.)
