First time flying with checked baggage. How does it work

First time flying with checked baggage. How does it work?
I'm leaving from Charleston, SC, to Atlanta, GA, and then from Atlanta, GA, to Baltimore, MD. I'm checking one bag and carrying the other one on the plane. How does the baggage transfer between the plane to Atlanta to the one going to Baltimore? Do I check my baggage at the gate when I leave Charleston, pick it up right next the plane, and then check it at the counter at Atlanta when I get to my connecting flight?

I'm in Australia so I don't know if our system is exactly the same as yours but I'll try anyway. When you get off the plane in Atlanta you'd get your baggage from the carousel and take it to the baggage check in desk (like you did when you left charleston) and check it in again for your second flight. In other words you have to transfer your baggage otherwise u end up arriving in Baltimore with no luggage

I presumed you will be travelling with the same airline all the way to Baltimore, upon check-in in Charleston, you will be issued a security number attached with your boarding pass this numbers corresponds the details on your checked-in luggage, including the flight number and destination. If you are travelling continously to Baltimore and transitting only from Atlanta you don't have to worry about the luggage it wil be transfered to your next flight bound Baltimore.

No, you only check your bag once if you're flying Domestic (that means you're not flying out of the country). The airport crew transfers your checked luggage from one plane to the next when you have a connecting flight. Sometimes they mess up and your luggage doesn't make it on your next flight. I fly at LEAST twice per year, and I've only had my bags messed up from that twice in my life. They send it on the next flight, which is usually only a couple hours later. You can choose to wait, or they'll ship it to you at whatever address you give them within 24 hours. No biggie. Don't fret :-) This makes some people nervous, so they opt to pack one days worth of essentials with them on the plane in their carry-on. But remember, you can't pack liquids in your carry-on bag.

No...No...No...we don't do what Australia does. If you are going on the same airline for both flights, they will make the transfer for you and when you arrive ...at your final destination....Wallah! Your bag is there too. Unless they don't get it tagged properly, they forget to put it on , they forget to take it off or,they go on strike, or the million of other things that could happen. Actually I've been flying about 8- 10 times a year for 25 years and only had one lost bag. I went to San Francisco and my bag went to Hawaii; but returned two days later with a nice tan.

You can ask any of the airline staff. They will help you. If you don't ask, nobody is going to help you. Ever been on a roller coaster? You know that feeling you get in your stomach when you race down a hill? That's what you might feel during takeoff, landing and turbulents(if any turbulents happen during your flight. They don't always happen). If you think you might have motion sickness, you can take a Gravol before your flight just in case. Your mom can get it for you, and I don't think you need a prescription. Bring your ipod. You can plug in the headphones to the headphone jack if you want to watch TV. Bring a book or magazine if you want something to read while you wait.

There are actually two airports in Houston; one is quite large and the other is a little smaller, but both have their terminal maps online if you do a little searching, so you can find them and have a look at how the gates are arranged. Depending on the airline, you may end up landing at one gate and catching your next flight from the gate next door; or you may have to cross all the way to the other end of the airport. But either way, it's not so hard. Your flight attendants should tell you as you land, what gate you will be landing at; your next gate will be marked on your boarding pass. Once you know where you're arriving and departing from, you can figure out the best way to get there; it's usually very clearly marked so look up as you walk and notice the signs. You can also ask the gate agents at your landing gate, how to get to the next gate. If you have to change terminals or concourses (like if you land at B-12 and need to get to C-24) don't exit the security area; if you do, you'll have to go through security again which is a hassle. Usually all the concourses meet up in the middle, so you'd just walk up the B hallway to the center, and then walk down the C hallway looking for #24. If you're changing terminals there will probably be a tram, train or bus for you to ride; look for the signs and don't be afraid to ask. If you are checking bags, don't worry about them; they will automatically be routed on to the next stop for you. As for what happens while you wait, that's up to you; some airports have free wi-fi so if you have a laptop with you, you can go online and kill time. There will be some restaurants near the gates and/or at the concourse center where you can relax and get something to eat. You can do some shopping or relax and watch the planes take off and land. You can even try to take a nap if you can find a seat near your next gate. Just remember that the plane starts boarding before the departure time; usually 30 minutes. So if your second flight is at 2, they will start letting people on at 1:30. Don't wait till 2 to show back up or your plane will already be on its way out. And if for some reason you lose your second boarding pass (I lose mine all the time) any one of the gate agents will be happy to print another for you. You may want to ask your parent(s) to check to see which airlines have an airport lounge or club in the airport where your connection is. United calls them the Red Carpet Club and Delta calls them the Crown Club; most airlines have a club although not every club has one in every airport. A day pass to the Club will cost around $40 and might be a great thing to buy; most of the clubs offer free soft drinks and snacks (chips, nuts, nothing too fancy but still something to munch on), free wi-fi, big comfy seats where you can watch the planes take off, and lots of TV's. Some do not allow minors in so you'll have to do your homework and see even if you're allowed in, but if you can get in, you might be a lot more comfortable killing time in the club than wandering around at the gate.

which flight would you rather take

which flight would you rather take?
I'm flying Southwest in December and wanted to know which flight was better. It's from Tampa to New Hampshire and it goes from Tampa to North Carolina (This leg doesn't change planes) and then North Carolina to Philidelphia (1 plane change) and then Philly to Manchester. So there is 2 stops, but both of the flights are only about like an hour and a half, right? Or there is from Tampa to Baltimore and Baltimore to Manchester. So there is only one stop but both flights are about 2 hours long. The travel time for the 2 stop flight is 7 hours and 50 minutes. For the 1 stop flight it is 4 hours and 20 minutes. I know the first one sounds longer but the flights are both really short. So which one would you rather take? They are both the same price, 99 dollars. I am a 16 year old traveling alone and I hate flying lol. So I like the first one better because they are short flights. Which one would you rather take? I have flown american, united, us air, british air, and southwest. Southwest and British Air are the only ones I will take again. (Obviously I can't fly British Air to New Hampshire) Southwest is also the cheapest out of all the airlines as Jet Blue doesn't fly to Manchester NH

I would not take either of those flights if I had an alternative. Have you checked the other airlines?
2 :
If you are traveling alone - you're best off with the route that involves no plane changes. If that doesn't concern you - one other simple factor you can base your decision on is the availability of good seats. You can use a site like www.seatguru.com to look up the type of plane (based on the airline) and it will show you which rows/seats are okay versus really bad. You can compare the options for the different flights and pick based on that (assuming the online reservation process for the airline you're using allows you to view available seats). Good luck and I hope you have a great trip :)
3 :
I would rather do the one stop. Tampa to Philly is a long time to stay on the same plane, IMO. Two hours is a very doable flight length, and the connection can't be too long.
4 :
I think the worst part of flying is the take-off and landing, so I think you're much better off dealing with the slightly longer flight in order to avoid a separate take-off and landing. Get a new book, CD, or movie (depending on your preferred entertainment, and the equipment you have available to bring on the plane), and the flights will be over before you know it.
5 :
I would choose the second one because you only have 1 connection and you arrive at your destination faster. If you are not in a hurry to get to Manchester and like the feeling of airplanes taking-off and landing, then you choose the first option. I don't like having multiple stops because if something happens and your flight is delayed, there is a chance you may not make the other legs of the flights.
